Digital signage and guest Wi-Fi in a shopping centre

A refurbishment was the moment to rethink how the centre talked to its customers — digital signage, interactive maps and free Wi-Fi, all remotely managed.

The problem

During a major renovation, centre management reviewed their network infrastructure and how they communicated with shoppers, and decided to introduce digital advertising signage, interactive maps and free Wi-Fi hotspots. The solution had to be cost-effective, easy for the in-house IT team to run, and had to produce a good experience for customers and tenants. Management also specified remote monitoring, so the estate could be managed from anywhere at any time.

What was done

A dual-SIM cellular router was fitted to each of the newly installed digital signs, giving continuous connectivity independent of the centre's own network plus a Wi-Fi hotspot without extra equipment. Remote device management was the deciding factor: the IT and marketing teams needed their own software platform working alongside it to push real-time updates, see every device, get alerts when a router dropped offline, send over-the-air software and marketing updates, and locate devices from anywhere.

How it turned out

The digital and online platforms let brands and retailers reach customers across several touchpoints before and during a visit, with campaign messaging that can be changed in an instant and web content that reaches shoppers before they arrive.

Deployed at the time

As named in the original case study. Some of it is superseded, or was never in our range.

What we'd specify today

Current equivalents from our catalogue for this kind of site — not a statement about the hardware installed.

Where this came from

Transcribed from iDatanet's published case study. The router named in the source is the R2110, which is not in our current range — the products listed are the closest current equivalents we stock. The results section of the source describes platform capability rather than a measured outcome, and no uplift figure is stated.
